Riding Classes in Fort Worth, Texas – Learn to Ride at Benbrook Stables!

At horse camp's Riding Class, campers are taught Western and English riding styles, and occasionally ride bareback. Safety is emphasized, beginning with approaching the horse, mounting, holding the reins, turning, moving forward, stopping, and dismounting. Campers learn about saddles, bridles, bits, and blankets, gaining insight into their roles in different disciplines. During grooming sessions, they use various brushes and combs to clean the horse's body, mane, and tail. On warmer days, they shampoo, condition, brush, and prepare their horse for shows or evening turnouts.

Campers will acquire hands-on experience in tacking up their horses and will learn about different types of tack. They will be instructed on how to ensure saddles fit the horse correctly, choose appropriate blankets, and properly fit all tack on their horse. Furthermore, they will learn to identify the different parts of the saddle and bridle, differentiate between English and western tack, comprehend the functions of various tack items, and understand how to care for their tack.

Creative Arts & Crafts – Unleash Your Imagination!

This year in Arts and Crafts, campers will have the opportunity to decorate their own paint horse, create a dream catcher, and craft a friendship bracelet. They will also learn to sing "Happy Trails" during a hayride. Arts and crafts time is a wonderful opportunity to enjoy with new friends and create fun items to take home from camp. Many campers leave singing Happy Trails on the car ride home, as it is always a favorite activity. Depending on the day your child attends camp, they may participate in one or all of these activities.

All About the Horse and Anatomy :

The "All About the Horse" program provides campers with the chance to identify different horse colors and learn the specific names for each. For instance, a brown horse with a black mane and tail is called a Bay, whereas a brown horse with a matching mane and tail is known as a Sorrel. Participants will also learn to recognize various horse markings and will have the opportunity to sketch and color these markings. Moreover, they will gain hands-on experience with a range of grooming tools, shampoos, hair products, brushes, curry combs, and more. One session will focus on understanding the barn environment, including everything from the role of a barn cat to stall cleaning procedures, offering a thorough insight into the daily life of horses in a barn setting. Campers will have the chance to feed the horses and examine and feel the different types of grain and hay. A comparison will be made between the diet of an older horse and that of a foal or filly. Some campers might even taste various grains themselves during this interactive experience.

Additionally, we will explore the emotions of horses and how to identify if a horse is feeling happy, sad, or perhaps uncomfortable. We will teach them how to determine a horse's age by examining its teeth and measuring its height in hands. Next, we will introduce the campers to the different parts of equine anatomy and let them use hair coloring markers to decorate the manes, tails, and other features of a horse. Although this may seem like a lot of information for a five or six-year-old, we present all these concepts in a fun and interactive way that keeps the campers unaware of how much they are actually learning.

Fun & Exciting Games – Let the Adventure Begin!

While part of the "Games" group, campers will have fun running, playing, and competing with other groups. They will engage in a range of activities, including barn tag, obstacle courses, scavenger hunts, hayrides, over and under, boot toss, and field day.

Fossil Digs:

Exploring Fossils. Attendees will learn about different kinds of fossils and participate in activities focused on fossil hunting.

Benbrook Lake, located southwest of Fort Worth, is famous for its fossil-rich terrain. The bedrock under Tarrant County mainly consists of sedimentary rock layers from the Late Cretaceous Period, dating back seventy to eighty-five million years. These rock formations are visible in the Benbrook Spillway cut and several other exposed areas, remnants of an ancient shallow sea that once covered this region. Over the last seventy million years, this sea withdrew to its current position at the Gulf Coast in South Texas. This marine environment, about thirty feet deep, supported various marine life, including oyster reefs, corals, clams, sea urchins, and ammonites. The ecosystem resembles today's conditions off the Texas coast, though ammonites are no longer present. Ammonites, now extinct, were mollusks with shells, closely related to nautiluses, squids, and octopuses. Many fossils found have modern counterparts, some of which, like oyster shells, show striking similarities.

Wild Life:

At Benbrook Stables Fish Camp, both children and adults have the opportunity to engage with Texas's native wildlife. Connecting with nature is advantageous for everyone, promoting care and appreciation through understanding. Fish Camp educates participants about local wildlife conservation through exploration and observation. Join us at Fish Camp to experience the beauty of the outdoors and uncover the wonders of the natural world.
